My clients come from all around the world, anywhere from Sao Paulo to Beijing, Bratislava to Moscow.
Whatever their level, whatever their language, their English sessions are tailored to their individual needs. Some examples of past clients are shown below.
Project Manager from China
A Chinese Project Manager was undergoing training in the parent company in Derbyshire. She was having difficulty understanding English spoken at normal speed and having problems with her accent, especially in meetings and over the telephone. She also needed help with British culture and customs. A weekly business English session on site over the 6 months of her placement worked on these weaknesses.
Doctor from Nigeria
A Nigerian doctor on the training programme for overseas doctors needed to be more clearly understood by patients and colleagues. We met for some 12 medical English sessions at the hospital, to work on this, as and when ward duties and academic training permitted.
Graduate Management Trainee from Spain
A Spanish Graduate Management Trainee needed speech and advanced communication training, prior to working with a well known company. He needed to be able talk to clients, suppliers and the shop floor, both face-to face and over the phone. The intensive business English course was taught on site, and covered accent, intonation, handling phone calls and understanding local speech patterns.
Spouses of Managers from France and Japan
The spouses of overseas managers also need a good understanding of England and English. An hour of conversation a week, over a year, gave a French spouse the confidence to talk to neighbours, make friends and explore the locality. A Japanese spouse, over 18 months, improved her pronunciation, learned to understand British etiquette, talk to her children’s teachers and finally, sell the house contents and the car on leaving. In each case the company paid for the sessions.
Nurse from Indonesia
The purpose of sessions with a nurse recruited from Indonesia was to improve her performance on the ward. Over 10 medical English sessions at the hospital, she worked on making herself understood to patients; handing over at the end of a shift; understanding the Derbyshire dialect and perfecting her grammar.
University Graduate from Hong Kong
A graduate of Derby University, originally from Hong Kong, booked one conversation session a week for a month, to improve his job prospects. Work on his pronunciation and his interview technique helped launch him into the workplace.
University Applicants from China
International students have become a feature in many schools in Britain. In an Independent school in South Derbyshire, Chinese students arrived in year 12 to prepare for entry into British universities at the end of year 13. In addition to good grades in their chosen subjects, they needed a high grade in the IELTS examination, if they wanted to get into the best universities. Specialist weekly language sessions in academic English enabled all four to achieve their goals.
